Kolkata metro resumes 'return-ticket' option | Know how to get it

The Kolkata Metro has reintroduced the return ticket facility after nearly 15 years, marking the comeback of a service that was discontinued in 2011. The move is expected to significantly ease daily commuting and reduce congestion at ticket counters.

Metro officials said the return ticket system has been introduced on a trial basis and is being issued through QR code–based paper tickets, which have been in use since January 1, 2025. Passengers can now purchase a return ticket directly from ticket counters.

Authorities believe the reintroduction will help cut down long queues, especially during peak hours, as passengers will no longer need to buy separate tickets for onward and return journeys. This is likely to save time and improve the overall travel experience.

The system is also expected to address the frequent issue of passengers struggling with small change at ticket counters. With a single transaction covering both journeys, ticketing is set to become more convenient.

Railway officials feel the return of this facility will particularly benefit daily commuters making up-and-down journeys, adding efficiency to the existing modern ticketing options in the Metro network.
