Kolkata Municipal Corporation board dissolved, Smita Pandey takes charge as 'administrator'
The Government of West Bengal has issued an order dissolving the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) with immediate effect under the provisions of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act, 1980. Following the dissolution, all elected members, the Mayor-in-Council, committees, the Mayor, and the Chairman are required to vacate their offices with immediate effect.
According to the order, all powers and duties previously exercised by the elected body will now be performed by a person or persons appointed by the State Government under the relevant provisions of the Act. The arrangement will remain in force subject to government directions and until further administrative changes are made under the law.
The order appoints the Municipal Commissioner of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation as the Administrator for the civic body with immediate effect. The appointment will remain valid for a period not exceeding six months or until newly elected councillors assume charge, whichever is earlier, as specified in the directive.
Smita Pandey, an IAS officer, has been assigned charge as KMC commissioner, making her responsible for leading the civic administration during this transition period. The restructuring places the municipal administration under executive control following the dissolution order.
