"Kolkata to get Water Metro connectivity," says Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari
Kolkata Police went into overdrive on New Year's Eve to curb the menace of unruly bikers and maintain law and order across the city. With high-alert status following the recent Delhi blast, security was exceptionally tight at major hotspots like Park Street. Extensive "Naka" checking points were established throughout the city to prevent any untoward incidents. Despite these measures, 263 individuals were arrested for creating disorder and engaging in unruly behavior during the celebrations.
Traffic safety was a top priority for the Lalbazar headquarters. According to police reports, a total of 1,301 people were penalized for various traffic violations. The crackdown specifically targeted reckless biking; 480 individuals were caught for riding without helmets, and 235 were detained for triple-riding. Furthermore, 149 people were booked for drink-driving, highlighting the strict zero-tolerance policy adopted by the city's traffic wing.
The security grid included both uniformed personnel and plainclothes officers embedded within the massive crowds. This strategy was designed to ensure the safety of families and revellers while deterring potential troublemakers. Beyond the arrests and traffic fines, the police presence remained heavy until the early hours of January 1 to manage the dispersal of crowds and ensure a peaceful transition into the New Year.
