Vandalism in Howrah over controversial painting during Durga Puja; 30 arrested
Abhijit Mondal, the Officer in Charge (OC) of Tala Police Station, has been suspended by the Kolkata Police, as confirmed on Wednesday. The suspension follows Mondal's arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Crime Branch on September 14 in connection with the RG Kar rape and murder case.
Mondal's role in the high-profile case led to his arrest, which has sparked significant concern regarding handling the investigation at the local level. His suspension indicates further action is being taken as the investigation progresses.
The CBI had arrested Mondal on charges of tampering with evidence in the rape and murder case. He was sent to CBI custody by a Sealdah court until September 17 and then until September 20.
On the morning of August 9, the body of a female doctor was found in a semi-nude state in the seminar hall on the fourth floor of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The deceased was a postgraduate second-year student and trainee doctor of the Department of Chest Medicine in the medical college. After completing her duty on August 8, she had dinner with her friends at 12 in the night.
There was no trace of the female doctor after this. At the same time, the initial report of the postmortem has revealed that the female doctor was raped. Blood was found on the mouth and both eyes of the deceased female doctor. Blood marks were found on the private parts and nail marks on the face.
