Kolkata records 16.2°C, breaking winter norms

In an unexpected turn of events, West Bengal, including the bustling metropolis of Kolkata, experienced milder temperatures on the first day of the new year. The Meteorological Department reports that the minimum temperature in Kolkata on Monday was recorded at 16.2 degrees Celsius, marking a two-degree increase from the seasonal norm. Similarly, the maximum temperature was 24.6 degrees Celsius, registering a slight dip of one degree below the usual levels. This deviation from the expected cold weather has been observed not only in Kolkata but also in various other regions across the state, such as Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur, Purulia, and Bankura, where temperatures range between 12 to 14 degrees Celsius.

However, certain pockets in North Bengal, including Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong, maintained a comparatively cooler climate with temperatures hovering around 10 degrees Celsius. Despite the current warmth, the Meteorological Department anticipates a slight drop in temperatures in the coming week, marking the final phase of the winter season in the region.
