As the festival of Makar Sankranti approaches, severe cold has set in across the state of West Bengal, impacting metropolitan Kolkata and various districts. The drop in temperature has coincided with the influx of approximately 35 lakh people from across the country gathering for a holy dip on the Gangasagar coast in South 24 Parganas. The Meteorological Department reported on Sunday that Kolkata is experiencing a minimum temperature of 12.9 degrees Celsius, one degree below the normal range, and a maximum temperature of 22 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal.
Other districts, including Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur, Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, and Murshidabad, are also witnessing temperatures ranging from 10 to 20 degrees Celsius, contributing to the prevailing cold weather. The cold spell extends to North Bengal districts such as Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong.
