Kolkata's 30 leaning high-rises pose safety risk, 65% illegal, Mayor confirms

Kolkata is facing a critical urban safety issue, with Mayor Firhad Hakim confirming the presence of 30 leaning high-rise buildings across the city. The mayor disclosed that 65% of these buildings are illegal, either constructed without proper approvals or violating building regulations. Many of these structures are residential, posing significant risks to the safety and well-being of the residents living in them. The buildings have been identified as structurally unstable, which has raised alarms within local authorities.

In response to the issue, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) engineers have been assigned to monitor the condition of these buildings. Regular inspections are conducted to assess their structural integrity and determine appropriate action. Hakim stated that discussions with engineers are ongoing to address the situation and identify viable solutions. Over the past year, KMC has demolished approximately 100 illegal structures, including several that were in hazardous condition. The municipal corporation has committed to continuing its demolition efforts to reduce the risk posed by these unsafe buildings.

While the city administration has taken steps to address the problem, opposition parties have questioned the accuracy of the official count of leaning buildings. They argue that the figure released by the municipality only includes buildings located along major roads, leaving out those in narrower lanes and residential areas, where inspections are less frequent. The opposition also criticized the mayor’s claim of 100 demolitions, suggesting that in some cases, only parts of illegal buildings were dismantled rather than entire structures being demolished.

In addition to ongoing monitoring and inspections, immediate action has been taken in some cases. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has issued an evacuation notice for a leaning high-rise located on Christopher Road in Tangra. The notice instructs residents to vacate the building within three days to allow for necessary safety measures, including potential demolition. This move is part of the ongoing efforts by the municipal authorities to address the risks posed by structurally unsafe buildings in Kolkata.
