CM Mamata pushes Aparajita Bill as TMC MPs urge President’s approval
The number of bus accidents in Kolkata and its suburbs has surged alarmingly, with 67 fatalities reported in 2024—marking a sharp increase from 21 in 2022 and 24 in 2023, according to a report by Kolkata Police submitted to the Transport Department. Overspeeding and racing among private buses have been identified as the primary culprits behind this deadly trend.
To curb this menace, the West Bengal government has announced the launch of a mobile app designed to track bus drivers in real-time. Transport Minister Snehasis Chakraborty revealed that the app would be mandatory for all bus drivers, with their speed and driving patterns monitored by Kolkata Traffic Police. Drivers caught speeding will face strict penalties, including show-cause notices and eventual license cancellations. "Reckless drivers will be held accountable. This app will ensure safer public transportation," said the minister.
Developed by the state’s IT department, the app aims to prevent dangerous racing on city roads. The Transport Department also plans to conduct workshops for bus drivers to educate them on road safety measures. In cases of accidents caused by reckless driving, the government has promised severe consequences, including legal action and license revocation.
The initiative is being hailed as a bold step by the Mamata Banerjee-led government to improve road safety and restore public trust in the transport system. Transport officials are optimistic that the app will significantly reduce fatalities and ensure accountability among bus operators.
