Kolkata has once again set an environmental benchmark, being recognized by the Government of India as one of the top three cities for significant improvement in Particulate Matter (PM₁₀) levels and overall Air Quality Index (AQI).
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee shared the achievement in a tweet, expressing gratitude to the people of Kolkata for their collective effort. “Kolkata again shows the way! Grateful to the people for their support. Let’s all — citizens and agencies alike — keep up the effort for a cleaner, greener city,” she wrote.
Mayor Firhad Hakim welcomed the Centre’s recognition and praised the sustained work by civic bodies. “This is not a one-day effort. We are working every day to keep the environment clean and green,” he said. He also emphasized the importance of urban planning and announced a major drainage review meeting scheduled for next Tuesday to prepare for the upcoming monsoon season.
The Air Quality Index (AQI-IN) in Kolkata today stood at 50, placing the city in the ‘Good’ category, according to real-time monitoring.
