Kolkata residents are still pulling out light jackets only in the early mornings because real winter has refused to arrive in the city due to a low-pressure system lingering over the Bay of Bengal, cold northern winds are being blocked, keeping the minimum temperature comfortably above 17°C. The city recorded a low of 17.5°C (exactly normal) and a high of 27.9°C (one degree below normal) giving a pleasant feel instead of the usual December weather.
IMD says the next 24 hours will remain similar — mostly clear skies, a touch of morning mist, maximum around 28°C and minimum near 18°C. Humidity stays between 42% and 92%, but not a single drop of rain was recorded anywhere in the state in the past day. The dry and calm weather is perfect for walks and outdoor plans, though woollens are still packed away.
The MET office hints that by the end of next week the low-pressure system will weaken likely allowing colder air to flow in. That’s when Kolkata can expect the mercury to drop and the familiar chill to return.
