Kolkata temperature dips below 20°C as storms sweep South Bengal, more rain likely till Friday

Several districts of South Bengal, including Kolkata, experienced rainfall and thunderstorms from Monday night, leading to a significant drop in temperatures. The minimum temperature in Kolkata dipped to 19.2°C, falling below the 20°C mark, which is considerably lower than the seasonal average. The maximum temperature was recorded at 33.8°C. Despite the cooling, atmospheric humidity remained high, fluctuating between 51% and 96%, contributing to discomfort during the day.

The Regional Meteorological Department reported that the ongoing weather activity is expected to continue across South Bengal till Friday. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and rainfall are likely in multiple districts, with some areas predicted to experience squalls (Kalbaisakhi) and hailstorms. Light to moderate rainfall is expected across both eastern and western parts of South Bengal, including Kolkata.

In North Bengal, districts such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri are also expected to receive rainfall starting Wednesday. On Friday, areas stretching from Darjeeling to Malda are likely to witness stronger thunderstorms and rain, with wind speeds possibly reaching 40–50 kilometres per hour. While the intensity of rainfall may decrease slightly on Wednesday and Thursday, it is expected to rise again on Friday.

Coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal may witness rough sea conditions with high waves. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea over the next few days due to safety concerns. These weather developments are being linked to cyclonic circulations currently active over southwest Rajasthan and northeastern Assam, as well as formations over northern Bangladesh and the Comorin region.

Additionally, a new western disturbance is likely to approach the northwestern Himalayan region by Friday, which could influence weather patterns in eastern India, including Bengal. The Meteorological Department has stated that no major change in overall temperatures is expected in the region in the coming days. Evening and night-time rainfall activity is likely to continue, while daytime humidity may persist.
