Kolkata youth arrested for extorting cash, certificates over college admission promise

The Shyampukur police have arrested a 28-year-old youth named Gaurav Chaubey on charges of extorting cash and original academic certificates from a student under the false pretense of securing college admission. The accused, a resident of Gopal Chandra Bose Lane under the Sinthi police station limits, was apprehended following a formal complaint registered by an 18-year-old girl residing in the Shyampukur area. Following the complaint, the police initiated a formal investigation under Section 318(4) of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.

According to the police report, the incident took place on June 13 at around 6:30 PM. The complainant alleged that Chaubey approached her and her friends, promising to facilitate their admission into the Maharaja Shrishchandra College in Kolkata. By tempting them with assured seats, the accused extorted Rs 17,000 in cash. Furthermore, he gained the victim's trust and convinced her to hand over several of her original academic documents and certificates under the pretext of processing the official admission paperwork.

When the specified admission period passed without any progress, the victim became anxious about her academic future and began demanding the return of both her money and original documents. Realizing she had been defrauded, she approached the local police station for help. An investigation team led by Sub-Inspector Shiv Krishna Mishra was formed to probe the matter. The police are currently interrogating the suspect to determine if he operated as part of a larger organized racket or had other active accomplices. The accused was produced before the Sealdah Court and has been remanded to police custody until July 22.
