New Town has received recognition in three categories at the Smart Cities India Awards 2023, supported by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Centre's Smart Cities Mission. The New Town Green Smart City Corporation (NKGSCC) is now planning to promote solar and renewable energy in the township.
Out of the 14 categories of awards, New Town was awarded in the smart city of the year, smart energy project for the use of non-conventional sources of energy, and best green buildings project categories. A senior NKGSCC official said, "This will encourage us to work on more environment-friendly projects."
Last year, New Town received awards in two categories, including smart waste disposal and clean city and digital city. In addition, the NKGSCC proposed the introduction of battery-powered autos to reduce carbon emissions. Earlier, the township had launched a 100 app-based public cycle-sharing scheme and 100 e-bikes. The New Town Development Authority (NKDA) is also working on plans to introduce app-based 'Toto' services in the township.
The recognition and efforts of New Town in promoting sustainable living are expected to inspire other townships to take similar initiatives. The promotion of renewable energy will not only benefit the environment but also make the township more self-sufficient in its energy needs.
