The Kolkata Police has joined forces with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur to carry out a study on traffic volume at major crossings in the city during school hours and peak evening hours. The objective of the study is to evaluate the importance of shared transport to schools and offices in ensuring smooth traffic flow in Kolkata.
The study commenced on Monday at various intersections in south Kolkata, with police officials providing assistance to the IIT team as required. The study will involve analysing the traffic density at major crossings during different times of the day, including the number of vehicles and pedestrians passing through. The experts will also examine the time taken by buses to negotiate a crossing as well as the time taken to complete a trip.
A senior police officer stated that the police department has been requested by Lalbazar to assist the IIT team and provide manpower and data as needed. The study will be conducted in two parts, with the first part focusing on traffic volume during school hours and peak evening hours, while the second part will concentrate on the role of buses in Kolkata's overall transportation system.
By conducting this study, the Kolkata Police and IIT Kharagpur aim to develop strategies and solutions to address traffic congestion in the city. It is hoped that this collaboration will help in improving traffic management and making Kolkata's roads safer and more efficient for everyone.
