Chaos erupted at Bihar’s Madhubani Railway Station on Monday as passengers attempting to board the overcrowded Swatantrata Senani Super Fast Express broke the windows of an AC coach. The train, running from Jainagar in Bihar to New Delhi via Prayagraj, was packed beyond capacity, preventing many from boarding, leading to frustration and vandalism.
Eyewitnesses reported that as the train remained stationary, a crowd gathered and attempted to enter through the doors, but the extreme overcrowding made it impossible. Some individuals resorted to breaking the train’s windows, with videos circulating on social media showing a man kicking a cracked window while others attempted to climb through. Panic ensued among passengers already inside, particularly children.
A viral video of the incident has garnered over a million views on social media, with users sharing concerns about train travel during the Maha Kumbh Mela. One user wrote, “Terrifying experience! In 2025, there is no point in travelling by train with your family.” Another recounted a separate experience, stating, “Yesterday I was travelling in Sangam Express 14164 in 2nd AC, and it was full of ticketless people who refused to vacate my seat.”
Railway officials confirmed that several individuals involved in the vandalism were detained. Despite the damage, the train continued its journey to Prayagraj without immediate repairs. No injuries were reported, and authorities are monitoring the situation as railway congestion continues to escalate ahead of the Maha Kumbh Mela.
Similar incidents have been reported elsewhere, including in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon, where miscreants allegedly pelted stones at the Taptiganga Express traveling from Surat to Prayagraj. Authorities have urged passengers to follow railway guidelines as additional measures are being considered to manage the heavy rush.
