As the political atmosphere heats up ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, a series of allegations and counter-allegations continue between the BJP and Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. The BJP has accused Trinamool of planning incidents similar to Palghar in Purulia, while Trinamool has retaliated by labeling BJP leaders as chieftains of ganja smugglers. The recent controversy emerged with the recovery of over 40 kg of ganja from the residence of Rupa Roy, a BJP member of Kandua Gram Panchayat in Navghara Sardar Para of Sankrail.
The Intelligence Department of Howrah Police, acting on a tip-off, conducted a raid at Rupa Roy's house, leading to the discovery of the substantial quantity of ganja. Police sources indicate that Rupa Roy's husband, Nimai Roy, had been involved in clandestine ganja trading for an extended period.
Following the raid, the arrested Panchayat member is currently undergoing police interrogation. In response to the incident, Trinamool Congress held a press conference at Trinamool Bhawan, where spokespersons Kunal Ghosh and Devanshu Bhattacharya accused the BJP of cultivating ganja in Bengal. They further alleged that not only is the BJP involved in the ganja trade, but its leaders are also engaged in illicit activities related to drugs like heroin. The ongoing exchange of accusations adds another layer of tension to the political landscape of West Bengal, setting the stage for a charged election season.
