Senior leader of the Trinamool Congress, Kunal Ghosh, has appealed to President Droupadi Murmu to remain above political disputes amid the ongoing controversy between the West Bengal government and the President. In a post on social media platform X on Sunday morning, Ghosh said he respects Murmu’s life struggles, experience and achievements but alleged that her recent remarks during a programme in North Bengal were being used for political purposes.
Ghosh also claimed that in 2017, when he was a Rajya Sabha MP, he had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggesting that Murmu, who was then the Governor of Jharkhand, should be considered as a candidate for the President’s post. According to him, the proposal was not taken seriously at the time. Referring to the recent developments, the Trinamool leader alleged that the BJP was trying to use the President’s office as a political voice. He urged Murmu not to become part of political controversies and said the President should remain above party politics.
The controversy began after Murmu attended a tribal conference in Siliguri in North Bengal. During her address, she expressed displeasure over the change in the venue of the programme and the absence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee or senior state officials to receive her as per protocol. Her remarks triggered sharp reactions in political circles, with leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party criticising the Trinamool government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi also commenting on the issue. As the debate intensifies, political observers say the exchange highlights the growing tensions between the Centre and the West Bengal government ahead of the upcoming political contests in the state.
