Another KMC councillor, Biswajit Mondal arrested, after woman alleges molestation and threats
The Lakshmi Bhandar Yojana of the West Bengal government is proving to be more than just financial aid for women. In Dhurpa village of East Medinipur district, it has become a source of empowerment, enabling women to dream and realize them.
Located in Shahid Matangini block under Tamluk police station, Dhurpa has about 100 families. For years, villagers had no Durga Puja of their own, and women would walk four kilometers to witness celebrations in a nearby village. This changed in 2023, when the women decided to organize their own puja.
With the help of Lakshmi Bhandar, which earlier provided ₹500 monthly assistance and now offers ₹1000, women pooled together their funds. By donating a month’s installment, they laid the foundation for their Durga Puja under the banner of Matrishakti Puja Samiti.
This year marks the third edition of the Durga Puja in Dhurpa, organized entirely by the women of the village. What began as a community effort has now become a celebration of empowerment and pride.
