Lalu Prasad seeks fresh term as RJD President, files nomination in Patna with Tejashwi by side

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad on Monday filed his nomination papers for re-election to the party’s top post. The veteran leader has been at the helm of the RJD since its formation in 1997, following a split in the Janata Dal.

The 78-year-old leader, who has been battling multiple health issues, arrived at the RJD state headquarters in Patna accompanied by his younger son and political heir Tejashwi Yadav and wife Rabri Devi, both former deputy chief minister and chief minister of Bihar, respectively. The nomination marks his continued leadership of the party ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

A large number of RJD workers gathered outside the party office to witness the event. Lalu Prasad, once known for his earthy, charismatic public persona, was greeted with chants and cheers from the crowd as he entered the premises.

Speaking to reporters at the venue, Tejashwi Yadav said, “A wave of delight has swept across party workers upon Lalu ji completing his tenure and raring to go for another. We are confident his leadership will steer us to victory in the days to come.” At a state council meeting held in Patna last week, Lalu Prasad had urged workers to approach the Assembly elections with the aim of making Tejashwi the next Chief Minister of Bihar.

RJD spokesperson and assistant returning officer for the organisational polls, Chittaranjan Gagan, said the formal announcement of Lalu Prasad’s re-election will be made in due course as per the internal procedures of the party. The organisational election process is being conducted under party rules and guidelines.
