Continuous heavy rainfall since Wednesday night has affected several regions across Sikkim and North Bengal, including both hilly and low-lying areas. National Highway-10, which connects Siliguri to Gangtok, has been blocked at multiple points on Thursday morning due to landslides in Mamkhola, Bhalukhola, and Lukbir, causing disruption in traffic movement.
Due to ongoing rainfall in the hills and the plains, the water level of the Teesta River is rising steadily. Increased inflow from the upper catchment has also led to a rise in the Domohoni River. The control room of the North Bengal Flood Control Commission under the Jalpaiguri Irrigation Department has reported the rising river levels.
In view of the situation, a yellow alert has been issued for vulnerable areas along the Teesta River from Jalpaiguri to Mekhliganj in Cooch Behar district. The alert has been issued due to the possibility of water entering low-lying areas on both sides of the river. Local authorities are monitoring the situation and necessary precautions are being taken.
