A 27-year-old tractor driver, Aman Kumar Yadav, died after being attacked by a langur in Athaniya village under Parshurampur Panchayat of Pirpainti block in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district. The incident occurred near the residence of former village head Avadh Bihari Mandal. Aman, who had been married on June 6, was returning from the fields when the langur leapt onto his tractor and bit him.
Villagers said the langur had become aggressive after its baby was killed a few weeks ago in a road accident involving a tractor. Since then, the langur has attacked more than 20 people, particularly those driving larger vehicles like tractors, autos, and SUVs. It does not target pedestrians or those on two-wheelers, villagers said.
After the attack, Aman was taken to Pirpainti Referral Hospital and later referred to Mayaganj Hospital in Bhagalpur. However, he died before reaching the hospital. Villagers have identified multiple victims of previous attacks, including Jitendra Yadav, Shobhakant Yadav, Bhushan Kumar Yadav, Rajan Kumar Mandal, Manish Kumar Yadav, Manu Kumar Yadav, Vijay Yadav, and Vijay Kumar Mandal.
Local residents have expressed concern and fear due to the repeated attacks. According to Mukhiya Ashutosh Kumar, people in the area are living in constant fear and avoid going out in the evenings. An official application has been submitted to the Divisional Forest Officer requesting urgent action to capture the langur.
A team from the Forest Department visited the village on Wednesday following a complaint made by village representatives including SDPO Arjun Gupta, BDO Abhimanyu Kumar, and police station in-charge Neeraj Kumar. However, the langur could not be captured. The villagers have demanded immediate steps to prevent further incidents.
