A 23-year-old law student from Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, tragically ended her life by suicide on April 9, leaving behind a heart-wrenching message written in lipstick on her mirror that simply read, “I QUIT.” The chilling message and the surrounding circumstances have left the community in shock and grief.
The young woman, a resident of Imamwada, Gadhia Phatak, had recently returned home after visiting the residence of a local dental practitioner, Asad, with whom she was reportedly in a relationship. According to her family, the relationship, which began around four to five months ago during her dental treatment, had developed into a promise of marriage.
However, they claim the relationship soured after Asad got engaged to another woman, a development that deeply affected her. Her mother said the student was called to Asad’s house that morning, where his entire family was present. There, she was allegedly locked in a room, her phone and vehicle keys were taken, and she was physically assaulted.
“She was crying uncontrollably when we saw her. He promised to marry her, then betrayed her. This wasn’t the first time—he has done this to other girls too,” her mother alleged, also referencing an incident where another woman had created a scene at Asad’s engagement venue, accusing him of similar behavior.
The woman returned home visibly distressed. Her family did not expect what followed next. The next morning, she was found hanging in her room, with the lipstick message still on the mirror. Her grandfather recounted how they were called to the clinic earlier, where multiple people were present, including women, creating a confusing and stressful situation for the young student.
The police were informed of the incident by a neighbor. Premnagar police officers reached the scene promptly, brought down the body, and sent it for postmortem. Investigations are underway, and statements from the family have been recorded.
