Two life convicts serving sentences in separate high-profile murder cases have been granted parole to get married after developing a relationship inside an open jail in Rajasthan. The unusual case has drawn widespread public attention and debate over the parole system for violent offenders.
The woman, Priya Seth, was convicted in the Jaipur Tinder-suitcase murder case, while the man, Hanuman Prasad, is serving a life term for killing a man, his three sons and a nephew in Alwar. Both were lodged at the Sanganer open jail, where their relationship reportedly began during incarceration.
Acting on directions of the Rajasthan High Court, the district parole advisory committee approved a 15-day parole for both convicts. They were released earlier this week to solemnise their marriage, scheduled to take place in Barodameo in Alwar district.
Prison officials said the convicts were housed in the open jail under existing prison reform rules, which allow selected inmates to work outside during the day and return to the camp in the evening. Their parole was granted after due verification and procedural clearance.
The decision has sparked mixed reactions, with families of victims expressing strong objections and indicating plans to challenge the parole order. Authorities, however, have maintained that the parole was granted strictly in accordance with legal provisions and court directions.
