West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made a surprise visit to Magma House on Park Street, just two days after a devastating fire at a hotel in Burrabazar claimed 15 lives. The Chief Minister's visit came after she toured the charred remains of Rituraj Hotel, where the tragic incident occurred.
Arriving at 24 Park Street, Mamata Banerjee called Magma House a “tinderbox,” highlighting serious fire safety violations. She pointed out that the building has only a narrow staircase and two lifts, making evacuation during emergencies extremely risky. The Chief Minister further revealed that several restaurants operating inside the building had stored LPG cylinders, posing a severe fire hazard.
In the aftermath of the Burrabazar fire, authorities have now ordered the closure of six restaurants operating inside Magma House, Park Center, and Celica Park in Park Street. According to officials, Kolkata Police confiscated gas cylinders from the premises, effectively halting restaurant operations due to a lack of fuel for cooking.

Responding to questions on whether these restaurants would be sealed, Mamata Banerjee said she has instructed the Kolkata Police Commissioner, the Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, and the State Fire Minister to immediately investigate and take necessary action. She stressed that public safety cannot be compromised in such high-density zones.
Her unannounced inspection reflects growing concern over fire safety in commercial buildings across Kolkata. With the Burrabazar tragedy fresh in memory, authorities are now under pressure to intensify checks and enforce strict compliance.
