Actor-politician Locket Chatterjee has reacted to the arrest of Swarup Biswas, who was taken into custody on Thursday night in connection with cases reportedly involving charges of extortion, molestation and violations of the Arms Act. Speaking after he was produced before the Alipore Court on Friday, Chatterjee said the allegations against him were not new and claimed she had publicly raised similar issues more than a decade ago.
Chatterjee alleged that Swarup Biswas and Arup Biswas were responsible for damaging the Bengali film industry and said she had highlighted her concerns at a press conference 12 years ago. She stated that the issues being discussed now had existed for years and had repeatedly been brought to public attention by individuals within the industry.
She further alleged that Swarup Biswas received support from several influential figures who consistently backed his decisions. According to Chatterjee, those individuals also played a role in creating circumstances in which technicians and artists lost work opportunities. She said accountability should not be limited to a single individual.
Following the arrest, criticism of Swarup Biswas has intensified among sections of the Bengali film industry. Technicians, directors and artists have increasingly raised allegations regarding his influence within industry bodies and federations. A section of industry workers has claimed that he played a decisive role in several important decisions affecting employment and professional opportunities.
Actor Rudranil Ghosh also commented on the development and alleged that corruption continued within the federation during Swarup Biswas’ tenure. He claimed that he was barred from work in 2021 after speaking against the system and alleged that technicians were pressured to participate in protests against him. Allegations of blacklisting, denial of work opportunities and a culture of bans within the industry have resurfaced following the arrest.
