During the Winter Session of Parliament, the LS Speaker decided to suspend 31 Opposition MPs for the remainder of the session, as several opposition members sought discussions in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on the recent breach in Parliament security.
The breach occurred when two individuals with gas canisters jumped into the LS from the visitors' gallery, causing panic among lawmakers. The demand for a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah intensified as the security breach coincided with the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to present the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2023, in Rajya Sabha, seeking to reserve 33 percent of seats in the Jammu and Kashmir and Puducherry Assemblies for women—a bill that has already received approval in Lok Sabha last week.
The opposition's insistence on a discussion about the recent security breach, coupled with demands for a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has contributed to disruptions.
In Rajya Sabha, proceedings were adjourned until 4 pm amidst uproar, with Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar labeling the security breach as a matter of 'collective concern.' Opposition MPs, led by Mallikarjun Kharge, were invited to discuss the issue in the Chairman's chamber. However, continued sloganeering resulted in the adjournment of the House until later in the day.
