Lok Sabha Speaker warns of exemplary punishment over alleged e-cigarette use in House

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday did not rule out “exemplary punishment” over the alleged use of an e-cigarette inside the House, emphasizing that maintaining the dignity of Parliament is non-negotiable.

BJP member Anurag Thakur had sent a complaint alleging that a Trinamool Congress (TMC) member was “openly using” an e-cigarette during proceedings, despite such devices being banned across the country.

“No one has the right to undermine the sanctity of the House,” Mr. Birla told reporters, adding that the matter is currently under investigation and will be referred to the appropriate House committee for further action.

“We will act on the recommendation of the committee. Everyone will have to maintain decorum in the House. A member could even lose his membership,” the Speaker said.

Birla further asserted, “It is a responsibility. The one who does not maintain decorum will be punished under the rules and procedures of Parliament. Action will be taken according to the rules,” signaling strict enforcement ahead.
