A serious accident occurred on the second Hooghly Bridge on Thursday morning amid persistent rainfall in Kolkata. A lorry transporting goods from Kolkata to Howrah lost control due to the slippery surface and crashed into the central divider.
The driver and cleaner of the vehicle sustained serious injuries in the collision. Both were rushed to SSKM Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Authorities suspect the continuous rain played a key role in the mishap, reducing road grip and visibility on the bridge.
The crash led to a temporary traffic jam on the bridge, with vehicles piling up during peak movement hours. Police and emergency services responded swiftly, clearing the wreckage and restoring traffic flow within an hour.
The incident highlights the recurring issue of rain-induced accidents in the city, especially on key routes like the Vidyasagar Setu (second Hooghly Bridge), which connects Kolkata with Howrah.
