Traffic movement towards Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh has significantly increased at the Chakghat border in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district. Officials reported that around 1,000 vehicles per hour were heading towards Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, while nearly 800 were returning. The surge in traffic over the past 24 hours is attributed to the weekend rush, prompting the administration to remain on alert.
Rewa Range Inspector General (IG) Saket Prakash Pandey stated that traffic on National Highway 30 has intensified, with thousands of pilgrims making their way to the religious gathering. “As of now, we are not stopping vehicles at Bela, Gangev, and Chakghat holding points, but police and administration are in alert mode,” he said. Sub-Divisional Officer of Police Udit Mishra added that while there is no traffic jam, vehicle numbers have risen significantly since Saturday.
Authorities have set up holding areas and help centers to regulate traffic and provide necessary assistance to travelers. The first designated parking facility for Maha Kumbh pilgrims has been established six kilometers from the Chakghat border in Uttar Pradesh. Similar holding areas have been created in Maihar, Katni, and Satna districts of Madhya Pradesh to manage the increased vehicular movement efficiently.
With Prayagraj and the Maha Kumbh fairgrounds designated as "no-vehicle zones," the administration has urged pilgrims to use designated parking areas and public transport facilities. Earlier this month, heavy traffic congestion was reported along a 250-km stretch from Katni to the MP-UP border due to the high number of vehicles heading towards the Maha Kumbh. The Maha Kumbh, which began on January 13, will continue until February 26. Authorities are closely monitoring traffic conditions to ensure smooth movement and avoid disruptions.
