Seventeen-year-old Monalisa Bhosle, who became an internet sensation during the Prayagraj Mahakumbh 2025, has been cast in the Bollywood film The Diary of Manipur. Filmmaker Sanoj Mishra personally visited her home in Maheshwar, Khargone district, Madhya Pradesh, to finalize the offer. Following discussions with her family, Monalisa signed the agreement and is set to undergo three months of acting training in Mumbai before beginning work on the film.
Monalisa will play the daughter of a retired army officer from Manipur who aspires to join the Indian Army. The film will depict her character’s struggles and challenges in achieving her goal. Anupam Kher has been cast as the father, with Deepak Tijori, Mukesh Tiwari, and Amit Rao in supporting roles. The film, produced under a Mumbai-based production house, has a budget of Rs 20 crore and is currently being shot in London.
Director Sanoj Mishra stated that he visited Monalisa’s village to meet her family, describing them as simple and humble people. He confirmed that she would travel to Mumbai within two days for professional training in acting. The training will focus on preparing her for the role while retaining her natural personality and expressions. Mishra also emphasized that she has potential and will be given proper guidance to establish her career in the film industry.
Monalisa gained massive social media attention at the Mahakumbh while selling pearl and rudraksha garlands with her family. People gathered to take selfies with her, making her a viral sensation. The overwhelming attention led her to return home to Maheshwar. She comes from a financially constrained background and was unable to complete her education due to economic hardships. She has basic knowledge of English but did not attend school regularly.
Previously, Monalisa was offered the role of a brand ambassador for Maheshwari Sarees, which her family declined. However, after discussions, they agreed to let her act in The Diary of Manipur. Mishra, known for directing films like The Diary of West Bengal and Gandhigiri, has stated that Monalisa's selection aligns with his approach of introducing new talent. The film’s production schedule will continue after she completes her training in Mumbai.
