An FIR has been filed against Mahua Moitra following remarks related to cattle and the West Bengal government’s recent guidelines on cow slaughter. The controversy began after a video was posted on the MP’s official social media page on May 16, where she alleged that the state government’s directive on cow slaughter was “motivated” and intended to appease a particular section of society. She also claimed the move had created panic among cattle traders and livestock market operators.
In the video, Mahua Moitra questioned policies related to beef exports and commercial subsidies under the BJP-led central government, alleging that the measures were affecting livelihoods linked to cattle trade. Following the remarks, local BJP leader Golok Biswas filed a written complaint at Karimpur Police Station accusing the TMC MP of making provocative statements and attempting to disturb communal harmony.
Reacting to the controversy, BJP MLA Samarendranath Ghosh said the government notification did not mention shutting down cattle markets. According to him, the directive was introduced to prevent cattle smuggling along the India-Bangladesh border. He also questioned whether the MP’s statements indirectly supported cattle smugglers operating in border areas.
The controversy follows an earlier dispute between Mahua Moitra and Golok Biswas. On May 9, Biswas had allegedly referred to the MP as a “female cobra” on social media and urged people not to rent houses to her. Mahua Moitra had subsequently lodged a police complaint over those remarks. Golok Biswas has now claimed that the current developments are a response to that earlier complaint. Police have started an investigation into the matter, while political tension has reportedly increased in the Karimpur area of Nadia district.
