In a tragic incident in Malda, a young couple, Phultus Mandal and Rakhi Mandal, both from the Baman Gola police station area, committed suicide after facing opposition from Rakhi’s family. Phultus, a daily wage laborer, and Rakhi, a 12th-grade student, had been in a relationship since they met during Durga Puja. Sources revealed that the couple's relationship was not accepted by Rakhi’s family, which reportedly led to their drastic decision.
On the night of the incident, the couple attempted suicide by consuming poison during a video call with a friend in the Agampur area of Gajol police station. Both were found unconscious and rushed to Gajol Rural Hospital, later being transferred to Malda Medical College Hospital for further treatment.
Despite efforts to save them, Rakhi succumbed to her injuries at 8 PM, while Phultus passed away at 1 AM the following day. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, with local concerns rising over the pressures faced by young couples in the face of familial disapproval.
