The Government Railway Police (GRP) at Malda Town station seized a trolley bag containing a large quantity of cannabis and arrested two individuals on Monday night. The accused have been identified as Jhantu Sarkar (35), a resident of Narsinghpur village under Murshidabad’s Sagarpara police station, and Govinda Upadhyay (33), a resident of Fitu Road under Delhi’s Badarpur police station. Officials stated that the duo was attempting to smuggle the consignment to Delhi by train when they were apprehended.
According to GRP sources, officers acted on specific intelligence and intercepted the two men on the platform while they were waiting with the trolley bag. A thorough search led to the recovery of cannabis worth several lakhs in the illegal market. Authorities suspect that the duo was part of a larger smuggling network. Following their arrest, the accused were taken into custody, and legal proceedings were initiated. Further interrogation is underway to uncover potential links to inter-state drug syndicates.
The seizure comes shortly after a separate case in Kolkata, where a dead body was found in a trolley bag, raising concerns over the misuse of such luggage for criminal activities. In response, railway authorities have increased security checks at major stations, focusing on suspicious baggage. Officials confirmed that additional surveillance measures are being implemented to curb narcotics trafficking through railway networks.
