Vandalism in Howrah over controversial painting during Durga Puja; 30 arrested
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) and the central government of deliberately submerging parts of Bengal to save neighboring Jharkhand from flooding. In a strong statement on Thursday, Banerjee announced that she has ended all communication with the DVC, holding them responsible for releasing excess water into Bengal, leading to severe flooding in multiple districts.
Mamata Banerjee expressed her anger over the release of 4 lakh cusecs of water, which she believes was done to protect Jharkhand at the cost of Bengal’s safety. "If this is not a conspiracy by the central government, then what is it?" she asked. Banerjee demanded answers, questioning whether the DVC would compensate the people of Bengal for the losses they were suffering due to the flood. "This water has been given by a particular person, not by God," she remarked, emphasizing the human element behind the disaster.
Despite the challenges, Banerjee assured the public that her administration is fully engaged in relief efforts. "The state administration is engaged in every possible help," she said, adding that all ministers and MPs of the Trinamool Congress are visiting the flood-affected areas to assess the damage and offer assistance. Banerjee herself has been touring the districts for days, ensuring that the government is actively working to mitigate the impact of the disaster.
The chief minister further reassured the people of Bengal that adequate arrangements are being made for food and drinking water in the affected areas. "I will not let anyone face any trouble," she stated, committing her government to continue its relief efforts until normalcy is restored.
Mamata Banerjee's sharp criticism of the DVC and the central government has escalated the political tension surrounding the flood crisis. Her remarks come as West Bengal struggles to cope with widespread damage, raising questions about the role of the DVC and the government’s management of water resources.
