Mamata announces 5,000 per month aid for returning migrant workers

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced a major new scheme aimed at the rehabilitation of migrant workers. The CM stated that a conspiracy is afoot against the Bengali language and identity in other states, where Bengali workers are facing harassment and even being taken to jail. In response to these concerns and to provide a safety net for the estimated 2.2 million migrant workers from Bengal, her cabinet has approved a large-scale support package.

The cornerstone of the new initiative is the 'Shramshree' scheme, through which migrant workers returning to their home state will be rehabilitated. Under this program, skilled workers will be provided with a monthly stipend of 5,000 rupees for one year. This financial assistance is intended to help them get back on their feet and establish themselves in the state's economy without having to rely on external employment.

For those who are skilled and require long-term employment, the government has announced another complementary initiative called 'Karmashree.' Through this scheme, the government will provide job cards and work opportunities to skilled laborers. The goal is to ensure that these workers have a stable source of income within West Bengal, leveraging their skills for the state's development.

In her announcement, Chief Minister Banerjee also stated that the government would make adequate arrangements for loans for those workers who require them to start their businesses or ventures. Furthermore, the state will provide comprehensive social security and welfare benefits, including 'Khadya Sathi' (food), 'Swasthya Sathi' (health), as well as assistance with schooling and housing.

The CM revealed that the government's efforts have already led to the return of 2,730 families, which accounts for approximately 10,000 people, with state government support. This figure highlights the immediate need for such a program and underscores the government's commitment to protecting its citizens, no matter where they are.

To ensure the smooth implementation of the schemes, Mamata Banerjee announced that migrant workers can register through the dedicated 'Shramshree' portal. This digital registration process will streamline the application and verification process, making it easier for eligible workers to access the benefits and support provided by the state government.
