Mamata Banerjee apologizes following Mahua Moitra’s statement on Gujaratis in Bhabanipur

Political tension erupted in Bhabanipur following a remark by TMC MP Mahua Moitra about the Gujarati community. The comment, made three days ago during a press conference at TMC Bhawan, questioned the Gujarati contribution to India’s freedom struggle. Mahua said: “Bengalis fought the freedom struggle against the British. How many Gujaratis were there? When you go to the Cellular Jail, whose names will you see? 68 percent were Bengalis… Apart from Veer Savarkar, can you name a single Gujarati?” Her statement drew immediate backlash from the sizable Gujarati population in Ward No. 70.

In response, TMC councillor Asim Basu publicly condemned the MP’s remark on social media, reading out a personal apology from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Mamata stated: “I personally apologize to my Gujarati brothers and sisters. I am proud of you. We do not approve of this comment. I apologize for such irresponsible remarks.” The councillor emphasized that the party recognizes the sensitivity of the issue, particularly in a ward where TMC hopes to regain support ahead of elections.

Mahua Moitra also clarified her statement, noting that it was made without party approval. She issued an apology addressed in Hindi, English, and Gujarati, underlining her intention to reach out directly to the affected community. The MP condemned her own remarks and expressed regret for any hurt caused, highlighting the need for careful communication on sensitive topics.

Political analysts suggest the comment risked alienating voters in a key constituency where Mamata herself is contesting. Ward No. 70, home to a significant Gujarati population, has previously shown fluctuating support for the TMC. Experts indicate that opposition parties, particularly the BJP, could exploit the controversy if corrective action had not been taken.

The incident underscores the importance of voter-sensitive communication in Bengal’s politically charged environment. With Mamata Banerjee personally stepping in, the party aims to reassure the Gujarati community and mitigate potential political fallout while emphasizing respect for all cultural groups.
