Mamata awards 50 lakhs to female footballers of East Bengal team
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for awarding the Bharat Ratna to astronaut Sunita Williams, highlighting her contributions to space exploration. Speaking in the Bengal Assembly, Banerjee stated, “Sunita Williams deserves the Bharat Ratna. I demand from the Assembly that she be conferred this honor.” She also extended congratulations to Williams and her entire team on their successful return to Earth.
Banerjee further acknowledged the efforts of international space agencies in supporting Williams’ mission. She referred to the tragic loss of astronaut Kalpana Chawla, emphasizing the risks of space travel. “Kalpana Chawla met with an accident while returning to Earth, leading to her death. Based on what I have studied, this is what I understand. If this is wrong, I would be happy to know otherwise,” she stated. The demand for Bharat Ratna has sparked discussions about recognizing individuals of Indian origin for their achievements in global scientific advancements.
Following Williams’ safe return, Banerjee posted on social media, welcoming her back alongside fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore. She wrote, “Welcome Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore back to Earth, finally and safely, after so many days. Our daughter of India returns to us, and we are deeply, deeply happy and elated. We are profoundly happy for Butch Wilmore also. Hail their courage, hail their return, hail human glory! I congratulate the rescue team for their overwhelming support and success.”
