Full state honors for Ratan Tata, one day mourning announced in Maharashtra
In a fiery speech in the Lok Sabha, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra criticized the government's handling of the women's reservation Bill, suggesting it should be renamed the 'Women's Reservation Rescheduling Bill' due to deliberate delays. She accused the government of postponing women's reservation and expressed doubt about its implementation even by 2029, not just 2024.
Moitra argued that the government's approach was centered on delaying rather than implementing reservation. She criticized the continuous delay tactics related to the next Census and delimitation, which would indefinitely postpone the reservation. She emphasized that women's reservation required action, not legislative procrastination, and labeled the current Bill as a sham.
While supporting the Bill, Moitra credited Mamata Banerjee with the original idea, labelling her as the "Mother of the Bill." She further highlighted that TMC already sent 37 percent of female MPs. She challenged the BJP to demonstrate its commitment to sending 33 percent women to the Lok Sabha, similar to their swift action in protecting cows when necessary.
Taking a dig at the BJP, Moitra said, “When this government wanted to protect cows… I support the move… you did not wait to count the number of cows. You did not wait to see whether the cow was a jersey or a Gir or Sahiwal. You just went and built the cow shelters. Are we women any less that we have to wait? We don’t need any more vandans, what we need is direct action. Mr PM, this is your moment to show that ‘Modi hai to mumkin hai’ (If Modi is there, it is possible). Implement the reservation immediately. Based on today’s voter list, send 33 per cent women to Parliament.”
