Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the Adivasi Day celebrations from Jhargram Stadium on Thursday, 7 August. The state-organised event marks the beginning of a four-day festival to celebrate World Adivasi Day, observed annually on 9 August. The celebration aims to honour the rights, culture, and traditions of tribal communities across West Bengal. The inaugural event included cultural performances and traditional music.
During the programme, Mamata Banerjee joined in a tribal dance to the beats of local instruments and played the madal, a traditional drum. She was accompanied by State Minister Birbaha Hansda. The Chief Minister also interacted with local residents near the stage before moving to the main dais. From the stage, she distributed benefits of various state government schemes to eligible beneficiaries present at the venue.
The Chief Minister lifted a child on stage and showered affection before addressing the gathering. The state government announced that the Adivasi Day festival will continue for the next four days with performances, exhibitions, and events dedicated to indigenous culture and welfare. The programme at Jhargram marked the official beginning of these celebrations in tribal-majority areas of the state.
