Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission, accusing it of “serious interference” in Bengal's electoral processes. In a two-page letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, she objected strongly to the proposal of setting up polling stations inside private housing societies.
Banerjee argued that polling booths have traditionally been placed in government or semi-government institutions to ensure equal access for every voter. She warned that locating them in private residential complexes would create a divide between “privileged residents and the general public,” undermining the principle of fairness in elections.
She urged the Commission to withdraw the proposal immediately, stressing that polling stations must remain accessible, neutral spaces that do not favour any specific group of voters.
