Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made an unannounced visit to the Finance Department at Nabanna on Tuesday, raising eyebrows across administrative and political circles. Her visit comes just days after she publicly criticized the department, alleging that its functioning was marred by too many meetings, processions, and a strong presence of left-wing ideology.
On Tuesday, Mamata reached Nabanna around noon. Instead of heading to her usual office on the fourteenth floor, she went directly to the Finance Department located on the twelfth floor. Her unexpected arrival left officers and staff surprised. Finance Secretary Prabhat Mishra immediately came out to greet her. They exchanged a few words before he walked alongside her to the corridor near her office.
The Chief Minister stayed in the department for six to seven minutes, during which several staff members approached her for photos. Mamata, known for her accessibility, obliged them.
This visit is being viewed in the context of Mamata’s earlier remarks at a high-level meeting. She had previously said, “Finance Secretary Prabhat Mishra is a very good person. But your office is filled with leftists. It feels like Alimuddin Street. Barring a few, most just discuss leftist politics.” She also complained that files were piling up and that employees were more focused on rallies and politics than on administrative work.
