India beats Bangladesh by 7 wickets in first T20, chase down total in 11.5 overs
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday dismissed allegations that the Kolkata Police offered bribes to the family of the trainee doctor who was raped and killed at a state-run hospital. Mamata Banerjee called the accusations slander, asserting that no such offer was ever made by the police.
The father of the 32-year-old doctor had claimed last week that the police attempted to cover up the case and offered money to keep them quiet. He alleged, “The police tried to hush up the case from the beginning. We weren’t allowed to see the body, and a senior police officer offered us money, which we declined.”
In response, Mamata Banerjee stated, "I have never offered money to the family. This is a false accusation. I had told the parents that money cannot compensate for a life, but the government stands by them if they wish to honor their daughter in some way."
Mamata Banerjee also revealed that Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal had offered to resign amid the protests, but she needed him in his role ahead of Durga Puja. She further alleged a conspiracy by the Centre, involving leftist parties, to destabilize her government.
To counter the criticism, the Trinamool Congress shared a video in which the doctor’s father refuted the bribery claim, saying, "These are baseless rumors. We never said the police tried to bribe us. This is a lie."
