No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday expressed strong displeasure over the recent spate of killings of Trinamool Congress leaders across several districts. At a meeting under the ‘Our neighbourhood is our solution’ programme, she questioned why the Intelligence Bureau was failing to get advance information on such incidents.
Banerjee directed Superintendents of Police, Inspectors-in-Charge and Officers-in-Charge to take full responsibility for their areas. Without naming any officer, she warned that holding a post without fulfilling duties would not be tolerated. The meeting was attended by District Magistrates, SPs and Commissionerate CPs from across the state.
In recent weeks, allegations of murder of Trinamool leaders have emerged from Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, Bankura and Cooch Behar. A Trinamool leader was beaten to death in Konnagar, two booth conveners were shot dead in another district, and the son of a panchayat pradhan was killed in a crowded Cooch Behar market. In Baruipur, a BJP booth president was allegedly beaten to death, adding to the political tension.
Banerjee’s remarks come amid intensifying political backlash, with her warning seen as a move to increase pressure on the police to prevent further violence.
