Mamata slams RSS chief Bhagwat’s 'anti-national' remarks on the date of India’s independence

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly reacted to comments made by RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat, which have sparked controversy across political circles. During a speech in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Bhagwat remarked that India’s true independence was marked by the inauguration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, describing it as the moment when India truly gained its freedom. He suggested that this event should be celebrated as the real Independence Day of the nation. His statement has caused a nationwide political uproar, with opposition leaders and historians expressing strong disapproval.

Mamata Banerjee responded to Bhagwat’s remarks by reaffirming that India’s independence was achieved on August 15, 1947, and that this date is universally recognized as the day India became a sovereign nation. Mamata clarified that the establishment of India’s independence was not just a political event but a result of years of struggle, sacrifices, and the collective effort of the freedom fighters. She argued that the true history of India’s independence cannot be altered by any political party or individual, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the established historical facts.

In her statement, Mamata also emphasized Bengal's crucial role in India's freedom movement, citing significant figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, and others, who contributed immensely to the struggle for independence. She pointed out that many ordinary people in Bengal and across India took part in the movement, with countless sacrifices made by individuals who laid down their lives for the cause of freedom. Mamata noted that it is important to honor these contributions and not forget the sacrifices made by those who fought for India’s independence.

Mamata expressed concern over the growing tendency to distort historical facts, particularly those related to India’s independence. She warned that attempts to alter the historical narrative, including changing the significance of events like the Ram Mandir inauguration, could erase the collective memory of the country’s freedom struggle. Mamata stated that India’s history and its fight for independence should be respected and preserved in its original form, without any political manipulation. She emphasized that any attempt to change the nation's history could undermine the unity and identity of the country.

The controversy surrounding Bhagwat’s statement has led to strong reactions from various political leaders, especially from opposition parties. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi criticized Bhagwat’s remark, arguing that such a statement could be seen as an attempt to erase the real history of India’s independence. Gandhi questioned how such views could be tolerated, suggesting that in any other country, such a distortion of history would have legal repercussions. Other political figures have also joined in condemning Bhagwat's remarks, while some have defended his interpretation.

This debate has fueled further discussions about how India’s history is taught and remembered, particularly in relation to its independence movement. The RSS, which is the parent organization of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has long been associated with promoting the idea of a Hindu-centric history and culture. Bhagwat’s comments, though defended by some of his supporters, have reignited concerns about the role of political and religious organizations in shaping historical narratives. The controversy surrounding the connection between the Ram Mandir and India’s independence is expected to continue to draw attention and provoke further debate in the coming days.
