No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
The Mamata Banerjee government had previously declared that the Centre's new Labour Codes would not be implemented in West Bengal. The controversy escalated significantly after the state received a copy of the new labor-related rules, which reportedly included fresh 'conditions' for the release of funds for the 100-Day Work Scheme (MGNREGA). In a dramatic act of protest, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo tore up the related paper at a public rally in Cooch Behar, calling the new conditions "dishonorable."
TMC leader Mamata Banerjee, who is on a two-day visit to Cooch Behar, launched a blistering attack on the Central Government on multiple fronts. However, her strongest act of protest was directed against the Centre's new labour law and the linked conditions for the release of MGNREGA funds.
Mamata stated that the state had received a notice about the Centre's new Labour Code just "three, four days ago," which imposed "new conditions" for releasing the crucial funds for the 100-Day Work Scheme. She vehemently declared, "We do not accept these conditions, and we will not accept them. This is dishonorable."
Demonstrating her rejection emphatically, the Chief Minister publicly tore the paper and threw the pieces away, clarifying: "This is not the Centre's official notice, this is the paper I had with me." This public rejection reinforces the state government's earlier stance against implementing the new central labour legislation and highlights the deepening rift between the state and the Centre over welfare schemes.
