Mamata to meet protesting doctors on Monday at 5 pm, says “5pm means five”

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has scheduled a crucial meeting for Monday at 5 PM at Nabanna with doctors currently on hunger strike. This meeting aims to address their urgent demands for improved working conditions, increased safety measures, and accountability following a recent violent incident where a fellow medic was assaulted at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

During a phone call broadcasted to the protesting doctors, Banerjee urged them to end their hunger strike, emphasizing the importance of direct communication to resolve their grievances. She stated, “Five means five. Don’t make me sit for 2-3 hours. I have a lot of work to do,” indicating her desire for a focused and efficient dialogue. Chief Secretary Manoj Pant and Home Secretary Nandini Chakraborty will accompany her to facilitate discussions, signaling the government's commitment to addressing the doctors' concerns seriously.

The ongoing protest has drawn significant public attention to the challenges faced by healthcare professionals in the state. Doctors have raised alarms about inadequate safety protocols, highlighting multiple incidents of violence against medical staff in recent months. They report feeling increasingly vulnerable while fulfilling their duties, leading to heightened anxiety and affecting their ability to provide optimal care. The lack of sufficient administrative support has also exacerbated these issues, prompting the current protests demanding systemic reforms.

In addition to safety measures, the doctors are advocating for improvements in their working conditions, including better staffing, access to necessary medical supplies, and appropriate compensation for their efforts. The protest has galvanized widespread support from the medical community and the public, as citizens recognize the vital role that healthcare workers play, especially in light of recent challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and other public health issues.
