Former actress Mamta Kulkarni has rejoined the Kinnar Akhada as Mahamandaleshwar after her resignation was rejected by Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi. In a video statement on Friday, Kulkarni confirmed her return, stating that she had resigned in an emotional moment but was reinstated by her guru. She reaffirmed her commitment to Sanatan Dharma and the Akhada’s spiritual mission.
On February 10, Kulkarni had announced her resignation, citing opposition from certain factions within the Akhada and allegations against her spiritual guru. In her resignation message, she said, “I am resigning from my post of Mahamandaleshwar of the Kinnar Akhada. I have been a 'sadhvi' for the last 25 years, and I will remain one.” However, she later stated that her resignation was not accepted, leading to her reinstatement.
Earlier this month, Kulkarni took sanyaas at the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 and performed pind daan at the Sangam. Following her initiation, she was given the title of Mahamandaleshwar and took on the name Shri Yamai Mamta Nand Giri. She declared that she would not return to films, calling it “absolutely impossible” and comparing her new spiritual role to winning an Olympic medal after 23 years of devotion.
Her appointment had sparked internal conflicts within the Akhada. Reports indicated that Kinnar Akhada founder Ajay Das opposed Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi’s leadership, leading to tensions. Das reportedly warned that Tripathi would be removed, while Tripathi asserted that Das lacked the authority to take such action. The disagreement contributed to the controversy surrounding Kulkarni’s resignation.
With her reinstatement, Kulkarni has stated that the sacred offerings she made upon assuming her role, including the royal umbrella and staff, will remain dedicated to the Akhada. She has affirmed her focus on spiritual service and her commitment to the principles of Sanatan Dharma.
