A man has been accused of engaging in sexual activity with a street dog in the Sonarpur police station area of South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal. A video of the incident went viral in the area and caught the attention of a local animal lover's organization.
The organization lodged a written complaint at the Sonarpur police station, leading to the arrest of the accused under section 377. The police are currently interrogating the accused, who is set to appear in court on Friday.
According to the animal lover's organization, local residents had reported that the accused had been torturing dogs for the last two to three years. The video obtained was from almost a year ago. Local residents had attempted to file complaints but to no avail, and finally contacted the animal lover's organization. Members of the organization conducted an inquiry into the accused on the basis of the video, and filed a written complaint with the police which led to the arrest.
The rescued dog underwent a physical examination and is currently under observation at the Veterinary Center in Sonarpur. Ranjan Bhattacharya, head of the department of psychiatry at Murshidabad Medical Hospital, commented on the incident, stating that such perverse desires can arise due to social disapproval or deviance, and in medical terms is called basality. The Baruipur District Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mohit Mollah, confirmed the arrest and stated that the police are investigating the incident.
This incident is not the first of its kind in the state, as there have been previous allegations of beating and torturing stray dogs. In response to such cruelty, animal-loving organizations previously organized a massive march in Malda a few months ago to protest against the mistreatment of stray dogs.
