A 26-year-old man allegedly committed suicide in Tamil Nadu's Trichy district on Monday after running into debt through online gambling. Wilson, an employee of a private firm, was found dead at his home in Anjalkaranpatti village near Manapparai in the district.
Initial police investigation revealed that the deceased lost around Rs 4 lakh after playing online rummy. A case has been registered and an investigation is on. This is the second gambling-related suicide reported in the district in a week. Recently, Ravichandran from Thiruverumbur died by suicide after losing over Rs 5 crore in online gambling.
The Tamil Nadu government last week passed the Tamil Nadu Online Gambling Prohibition and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2022 for the second time in the State Assembly to implement a ban on online gambling in the state after Governor RN Ravi returned the bill stating that lack of legislative competence.
While approving the bill, Chief Minister MK Stalin said that so far around 41 people have died by suicide in the state after losing money in online gambling. The bill to ban online gambling has received unanimous support from all political parties in the state.
