A tragic electrocution incident in Ekbalpur, Kolkata, on Saturday claimed the life of a 51-year-old man and left another critically injured, triggering concern in the area ahead of the upcoming elections. The incident occurred on Bhukailash Road under the Ekbalpur police station limits, where two individuals suffered severe electric shock inside a residential premises. Police and electricity department officials later visited the spot as part of the initial investigation.
The deceased has been identified as Shibsharan Prasad Shaw (51), while the injured person, Debsharan Shaw (45), is currently undergoing treatment in critical condition at SSKM Hospital. According to eyewitness accounts, Shibsharan came into contact with a live wire while attempting to hang wet clothes at his home. In a bid to rescue him, Debsharan also suffered electrocution, worsening the situation. Family members and locals rushed both to the hospital, where doctors declared Shibsharan dead on arrival.
Preliminary findings indicate that the accident may have been caused by a fault in a private electric meter, raising concerns about electrical safety in residential areas. The incident led to temporary tension in Ekbalpur, especially given the proximity to the election period. Officials from CESC Limited, along with police personnel, inspected the location to determine the exact cause and assess any safety lapses.
